Ontario Registered Psychotherapist

Helping Children, Adolescents, and Adults Navigate Anxiety, OCD, Trauma, and Life’s Challenges

Cheryl O’Neill is a Registered Psychotherapist who works with children, adolescents, and adults, helping clients navigate anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma, relationship challenges, and other mental health concerns. She brings a compassionate, collaborative approach to therapy, creating a warm and supportive environment where clients can feel understood, respected, and empowered to make meaningful change.

Cheryl first trained as a teacher, where she discovered how much she valued the one-on-one connections she developed with others. This passion for listening, supporting, and helping people grow led her to pursue psychotherapy. Today, she draws on both her professional training and lived experience to meet clients where they are and tailor therapy to their individual needs.

Her therapeutic approach is flexible and collaborative, with the therapeutic relationship at the center of her work. Cheryl integrates evidence-based approaches including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), mindfulness, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and psychodynamic approaches. She believes that effective therapy begins with trust, warmth, and a genuine understanding of each client’s unique experiences.

Cheryl is committed to practicing in a culturally aware, socially just, and inclusive manner. She works to understand the broader context of each client’s life and identity while helping them develop practical tools, greater resilience, and new ways of responding to challenges.

Clinical Specialties

Evidence-Based Care for Children, Adolescents, and Adults

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Cheryl has specialized experience working with OCD in children, adolescents, and adults. She uses Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), an evidence-based treatment for OCD, while incorporating other therapeutic strategies when appropriate to help clients reduce the impact of intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviours, and anxiety.

Trauma & Emotional Healing

Cheryl supports clients experiencing the effects of trauma, including PTSD and other trauma-related concerns. Her trauma-informed approach emphasizes safety, collaboration, and respect for each person’s individual experiences while drawing on evidence-based interventions to support healing and recovery.

Anxiety & Stress

Cheryl works with children, teens, and adults experiencing anxiety, stress, and related concerns. Therapy may incorporate mindfulness, DBT skills, ACT, and other evidence-based strategies to help clients better understand their emotions, manage distress, and develop more flexible and effective ways of coping.

Children & Adolescents

Cheryl works with children aged six and older and adolescents experiencing OCD, anxiety, trauma, and other emotional or behavioural challenges. Her background in education helps inform her ability to connect with younger clients and create developmentally appropriate, supportive therapeutic experiences.

Relationship & Emotional Well-Being

Cheryl helps clients explore challenges in relationships, emotional regulation, self-understanding, and interpersonal functioning. Through a collaborative therapeutic relationship, she supports clients in developing greater awareness, communication skills, and confidence in navigating relationships and life transitions.

Education, Training & Professional Development

Cheryl holds a Master of Arts in psychotherapy and is an Ontario Registered Psychotherapist. Her professional background also includes training as a teacher, providing her with a strong foundation for working with children, adolescents, and families.

Her clinical experience includes providing specialized ERP treatment for children, adolescents, and adults with OCD, as well as working with clients experiencing PTSD, trauma, generalized anxiety disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and other mental health concerns. As part of her clinical training, Cheryl completed a contemplative practicum at Bishop’s University, including 50 hours of arts-based mindfulness meditation training and participation in lessons and workshops focused on a range of meditative practices.

Her continuing professional development includes specialized training in trauma-informed psychotherapy, racial trauma treatment, clinical practice guidelines for suicide risk, OCD treatment, and mindfulness-based approaches. She has also received training in trauma-informed CBT and approaches integrating affective, narrative, and other therapeutic frameworks.

Clinical Philosophy

Cheryl believes that the therapeutic relationship itself is central to meaningful change. She takes time to understand each client’s individual background, experiences, values, and goals rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Whether working with a child struggling with anxiety, an adolescent navigating OCD or trauma, or an adult facing complex emotional or relationship challenges, Cheryl strives to create a space where clients feel safe, heard, and respected.

Her goal is not simply to teach therapeutic techniques, but to work collaboratively with clients as they develop greater self-understanding, resilience, and confidence in navigating life’s challenges.

Begin Your Care

Starting therapy can feel like a significant step. Cheryl offers a warm, collaborative, and supportive environment for children, adolescents, and adults who are looking for help with OCD, anxiety, trauma, emotional challenges, relationships, and other mental health concerns.

Together, Cheryl and her clients can identify meaningful goals, develop practical strategies, and build new ways of responding to life’s challenges—at a pace that feels supportive and appropriate for each individual.
