Racism can be profoundly traumatizing. For many people of color, the impact of racial profiling, workplace discrimination, police violence, community harm, or distressing immigration and incarceration experiences goes beyond daily stress—it mirrors the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but often falls outside standard diagnostic frameworks. Without targeted training, therapists may miss the unique cultural, historical, and systemic factors driving this form of trauma, leaving those affected without adequate care.

Dr. Monnica Williams is a recognized expert in the study and treatment of racial trauma.
