MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for PTSD

A research-based treatment that combines psychotherapy with MDMA to help individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) process trauma and reduce symptoms when traditional approaches have not been effective.

What Is MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy?

If you’re living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and have tried talk therapy, medications, or both without lasting relief, MDMA-assisted psychotherapy may offer a new path forward. This innovative treatment combines structured psychotherapy with the use of MDMA—administered in a safe, clinical environment—to help you process trauma more effectively and begin to heal.

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) is a synthetic compound that can temporarily reduce fear and defensiveness, enhance emotional insight, and increase trust and openness in the therapeutic relationship. When combined with psychotherapy, these effects create a unique opportunity to work through painful memories that may have felt too overwhelming in the past.

This treatment approach is currently in advanced clinical trials and is part of an Expanded Access program approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), allowing select patients to receive the therapy before full approval is granted.

The Science Behind the Treatment

MDMA-assisted psychotherapy is not the same as recreational MDMA or Ecstasy. In clinical settings, MDMA is carefully dosed and administered under medical supervision, with the support of trained therapists before, during, and after the session. The goal is not to escape reality, but to face it with less fear and more clarity.

In earlier Phase 2 trials, 107 people with chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD received a structured course of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. Results showed that:

  • 56% of participants no longer met the criteria for PTSD two months after treatment
  • 68% no longer had PTSD at a 12-month follow-up

These findings led the FDA to grant MDMA Breakthrough Therapy status in 2017, accelerating its path to potential approval.

The Behavioural Wellness Clinic participated in these trials at the University of Connecticut Health Center (UCHC), under the leadership of Dr. Monnica Williams and Sara Reed, MS. Our clinic now continues to offer this treatment through the Expanded Access program in partnership with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS).

What to Expect in MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy

The treatment process includes several stages:

  1. Preparation: You’ll meet with your therapy team for several preparatory sessions to build trust, discuss your history, and prepare for the MDMA session.
  2. MDMA Session: In a comfortable, supportive setting, you’ll take MDMA under the supervision of licensed clinicians. These sessions typically last 6–8 hours. You’ll be encouraged to explore thoughts, emotions, and memories as they arise, with guidance from your therapists.
  3. Integration: After each MDMA session, you’ll return for follow-up therapy to process the experience and explore how it connects to your healing goals.

Most participants in the Expanded Access program receive three MDMA sessions, each spaced about a month apart, with non-drug therapy sessions before and after to support the experience.

Who Might Benefit from MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy?

You may be a candidate for this treatment if:

  • You have PTSD that hasn’t responded to traditional talk therapy or medications
  • Your symptoms are significantly impairing your relationships, work, or daily life
  • You’re seeking a research-supported approach grounded in both science and compassionate care

Expanded Access allows individuals who meet certain criteria to receive this treatment before MDMA is formally approved for widespread use. Our clinical team will work with you to assess your eligibility and ensure your safety throughout the process.

Committed to Equity and Access

At the Behavioural Wellness Clinic, we are deeply committed to inclusive, culturally informed care. Dr. Williams helped lead the first MAPS therapist training specifically for providers of color and clinicians serving marginalized communities, ensuring that MDMA therapy is accessible and relevant for everyone who may benefit from it.
